Beyond Your Back with Chiropractic

The first thing a person may think of when they hear “chiropractor” is the spine. It’s true: the spine is central to the body, both physically and in terms of structure and support. However, chiropractors deal with the health of the whole body, not just the spine. Go one step further. If chiropractors can help your spine, imagine what they can do for your extremities. Imagine how good your arms, legs, knees, hands and feet could feel with the help of adjustments.

Extremities Pain

There are plenty of pain points that can occur in the human body, depending on its structure. The spine is, of course, a great place to start, but there are many musculoskeletal issues that can be helped with chiropractic care. Take for example, flat feet pain, tennis elbow, TMJ, or even knee pain or ankle pain from stepping incorrectly. Any condition, pain, or discomfort resulting from your body’s structure is the chiropractor’s area of expertise.

As we’ve mentioned before, Shephard Chiropractic Clinic is dedicated to gentle adjustments, using the Arthrostim. This allows very small, precise adjustments targeting smaller bones and extremities. Your foot, for example, has 26 bones and 30 joints. That’s probably more than you thought, right? And every one of those bones, if misaligned, may cause pain. Using an instrument to handle the adjustments allows our providers to treat you accurately and with minimal discomfort—for faster relief.

If, after going on a long trip, hiking, running, or exercising at the gym, you find your body is out of sorts or in pain, come see us. There are plenty of opportunities during normal exercise for your body to become misaligned and lead to some pain. In fact, some of our higher-level athletes, such as marathon runners in training will come in before and after their “big day” so that we can make sure everything is in proper working order. This allows their body to function at their best. Being proactive with your health can definitely include a pre-activity visit to the chiropractor.

Even if you aren’t a marathon runner, we’re happy to see you. Regular life can contribute to misalignments as well, just because of overwork, poor posture (bad habits), or even incidental slips and falls that don’t seem like a big deal at the time. Coming in regularly helps us keep you on track. For example, it’s extremely beneficial to have your hands and fingers adjusted after a long day at the computer. All that typing and moving the mouse? A hand massage and adjustment not only feels great, it’s also excellent for your range of motion, just in case they feel a little stuck or are cracking more often than normal. Your muscles and tendons will appreciate the revitalization, while your care provider will help keep an eye out for symptoms of carpal tunnel or arthritis. With regular visits, your provider will be able to see changes in your condition and structure, which can allow plenty of time for intervention with muscle stimulation or ultrasound to help with any worsening conditions.

All told, our spine is certainly the area chiropractors are known for (and excel at) but they truly are experts in whole-body health. Because everything is connected, your knee pain could lead to hip pain, which could lead to back pain. It’s in your best interest to get your knee (or elbow or foot or hand) adjusted, so your entire body can reap the benefits.
